All of us have likely experienced this in our workplaces: we do good work, but notice that others who “skate by” share in our success. That can make great leaders who can pull others with them seek better opportunities: and the business suffers. The same can be said for safety processes. People who embrace the process, engage in safety activities, and model safe behavior even when no one is looking should be rewarded with recognition for their efforts. Those who don’t should be minimized so as not to taint others. Nothing breeds success like recognition.
