Position Summary
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist serves as the site’s subject-matter expert and program owner for all environmental, health, safety, and security initiatives. This role leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS policies, programs, and systems designed to ensure a safe, compliant, and high-performing work environment. The Specialist exercises independent judgment in evaluating regulatory requirements, assessing organizational risk, developing corrective actions, interpreting EHS standards, and advising leadership on compliance strategy. This position partners with engineering, operations, facilities, and executive leadership to drive a proactive safety culture and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local EH&S regulations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Environmental, Health & Safety
- Develops, implements, and maintains EHS policies, programs, and management systems (e.g., OSHA programs, hazard communication, chemical safety, lockout/tagout, emergency response).
- Interprets and applies federal, state, and local EHS regulations and provides strategic guidance to leadership regarding compliance obligations and risk mitigation.
- Leads companywide EHS strategic initiatives, including long-term safety planning, performance improvement efforts, and regulatory readiness activities.
- Respond to employee injuries promptly, document incidents, and implement appropriate corrective actions.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
- Conducts advanced hazard analyses, risk assessments, and facility audits to identify gaps; develops corrective action plans and ensures timely implementation.
- Prepares and maintains all required regulatory documentation, records, and reports, acts as primary point of contact during inspections by OSHA, Fire Department, insurance representatives, and other regulatory bodies.
- Reviews engineering test procedures, equipment specifications, and manufacturing processes to identify hazards; recommends design or procedural modifications to eliminate or reduce risk.
Chemical & Equipment Safety Oversight
- Manages the chemical approval program, including review of SDS documentation, environmental considerations, compatibility assessments, and policy updates.
- Knowledge of and experience in CUPA, Cal/EPA / EPA, HMBP, HazWaste, etc.
- Oversees the development, implementation, and auditing of Lockout/Tagout procedures; advises engineering and operations on safe equipment design and modification.
Training & Cultural Leadership
- Develops EHS training programs, including onboarding, annual compliance training, emergency response, and equipment-specific safety protocols.
- Chairs and leads Safety Team meetings; evaluates safety concerns and drives corrective actions across departments.
- Provides coaching and technical expertise to supervisors and employees; influences safety-related decision-making across the organization.
Metrics, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Develops and monitors EHS performance metrics, KPIs, and trend analyses; prepares reports for leadership and recommends program enhancements.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of existing programs and implements improvements to support organizational growth, operational efficiency, and compliance.
- Ensures all safety equipment and systems meet regulatory standards and oversees associated inspection and maintenance processes.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Engineering, or related technical field.
- 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in EHS program management, compliance, or related professional practice.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and state/local regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to develop EHS policies, programs, and systems; experience advising leadership on compliance and risk management.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and EH&S management tools.
- Professional certifications (i.e., ASP / CSP, CHMM, OHST, or similar) preferred.

Hiring Range: $80,000-$120,000 (DOE)
