“Nothing worth something is ever free.”

As my esteemed colleague Fay Feeney reminds me, ‘free’ is a four letter word. In business, free is usually an investment to initiate a relationship with a customer, and it comes with risk. A company may lose a lot of money if minimal or no relationships develop from the free offering. On the other hand, the business may be rewarded with new relationships they wouldn’t have had otherwise. In safety, relationships are built with the investment of engagement and trust. In this instance, the word ‘free’ can inadvertently devalue the work that has been done to be successful. Overcome ‘free’ with value, which can be achieved in many ways.
