“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.”
– Winston Churchill
Sometimes things are not as they seem. This quote, for instance, is said to mean
dogs are trainable, pliable, and want human approval while cats want things from humans with no intention of serving them. Pigs are intelligent, omnivores, and as such, view themselves as equals. It’s also believed this quote was said in response to a comment Stalin made at the Yalta Conference in 1945 in which he told Churchill that FDR was a pig. There’s even question if Winston stated this exact quote at all as Sir Anthony Montague Browne, WSC’s private secretary, quotes a different version. What does this have to do with safety? A lot: know and understand the diverse views and abilities of the safety customer you serve as an equal to be successful.
