Sometimes it seems like our organizations concentrate only on metrics: numbers for performance, profitability, etc. Successful businesses remember that while metrics are important, talent is the real reason behind the numbers, and the best comes forward when barriers to performance are removed. For safety, I’ll paraphrase Matthew Hibbs, a recent student in the Corporate Safety Management course I just recently taught: “(safety performance) transformation occurs when organizational initiatives remove OSH related burdens on employees.” Imagine how much more passionately and efficiently one can work with hazards addressed higher in the hierarchy of controls.
